Disposing of organic waste matter responsibly is expensive. Using it as a substrate in digesters not only saves the cost of waste disposal, it treats effluents faster and cuts down on energy costs. For instance, when a farm installs an anaerobic digester and uses it to process manure, the digester residue yields a more effective fertilizer with a less unpleasant smell and reduces greenhouse gases.

Biogas produced through anaerobic digestion can also be used as heating fuel for farm buildings and to generate electricity to run the operations, reducing or eliminating heating oil and electric bills.

In food processing plants, an anaerobic digester is mostly used as a primary treatment of organic wastes, reducing their pollution load by up to 90%. The plant’s energy bill is cut back by making use of the biogas and by diminishing the retention time required for secondary treatment of wastes.
